The Princess theater, Melbourne
Victoria | 1 Review | July 2, 2010Ever wonder what it would be like to stand up in front of a beautiful theater from the ‘Grand Victorian Era’ ? Well, fortunately for you; it’s not too late! The Princess theater is one of the most distinguished Victorian theaters on the planet. This theater, dates way back from 1886. Boasting an elegant facade with domed roofs, and a filigree made of pure cast iron. The stair case and foyer is all made of a very beautiful shade of marble.
Once you are here; you could begin your journey by treating yourself to a fine dining experience at the Melba or the Marriner rooms. And once your appetite is taken care of, then prepare yourself to get highly entertained by the many international shows and musical productions such as ‘Phantom of the Opera’, ‘Les Miserables’, ‘Cats’, ‘Dirty Dancing’ and many more.
The Princess theater has elegantly found its place in the ‘Victorian Heritage Register’. Also, listed by the ‘National Trust of Australia’, this; one of a kind architectural beauty takes immense pride in its awe.
It was erected in the year 1854 by the famous actor George Coppin. Astley’s amphitheater lies first on the site; following the Princess theater right next to it. Later; in 1854, it was opened as ‘The Princess Theater and Opera House’. The theater compliments the Victorian street-scape on Spring street. Also, Standing out provocatively with the worlds first sliding roof and ceiling, it was fitted completely with the latest in electrical stage lighting.
Now; what is most unusual about this place is the famous ‘ghost sightings’. It is believed that on the 3rd of march 1888, Frederick baker; who was also known as ‘Frederici’, was performing in Gounod’s opera ‘Faust’. He was performing the roles of Mephistopheles. According to the play, toward the end, Mephistopheles sinks through a trap door and returns to the fires of hell with Dr Faustus. While being lowered, Frederici got a heart attack and unfortunately died right on the spot! The crew lowered him to the ground and covered his body. And he obviously neither went back on stage; nor did he take the final bows. When members of the play were informed about Frederici’s death, they said “he’s just been on-stage and taken bows with us”. And since then, many people who weren’t aware of the story of Frederick Baker, claim to have seen a ghostly figure in the theater. So, for many years after that; the third row seat in the dress circle was kept empty; in his honor!
