Cook Islands | Write a review | January 4, 2011

Of all the lagoons in the South Pacific region, Aitutaki is one of the most captivating. Mass tourism has not reached Aitutaki yet. Aitutaki would do well to avoid this negative impact. There are many tiny, motu islands that surround the lagoon. Most of these islands have no inhabitants. The main island, too, is secluded and tranquil, with a lifestyle that is laidback. There is a dearth of restaurants, shops, and huge resorts.

Aitutaki is separated by a 45-minute flight to Rarotonga’s north. Rarotonga lies at the heart of the South Pacific region. It is a premier place in Cook Islands. Aitutaki lacks direct flights from international locations. However, the island is well connected to Rarotonga, which has five, daily flights to Aitutaki. The average flight lasts for nearly 40 minutes. No airplanes fly on Sunday. Compare this with the ferry service, which is monthly. By ferry, the journey lasts for 18 hours. The population at Aitutaki Island comprises of nearly 2000 inhabitants. The inland and coastal villages are inhabited most by this population.

Aitutaki is an island, belonging to the lagoon. The Aitutaki island is replete with rolling hills and pretty villages. The accommodations are designed for tourists. A fringing reef surrounds the island. Twenty, low-lying, uninhabited coral islands line Aitutaki. These coral islands attract tourists in large numbers. The palm-fringed beaches are exquisite. The lagoons are ideal for snorkeling.

The Aitutaki island is remote and magnificent. The island has a triangular shape. It measures 4,000 meter in height, from the Pacific Ocean floor. The island is home to three volcanic islands. There are also 12 coral islets, called Motu.

Aitutaki was inhabited most probably in 900 AD. A legendary discoverer from Polynesia was named Ru. He called the island Utataki Enua O Ru Ki Te Moana. Inference can be drawn that Aitutaki was a premier destination among ocean voyages of Polynesia. Captain Bligh was part of the European entourage that discovered Aitutaki. Following his arrival on April 11, 1789, a mutiny took place. He is often regarded as the person who introduced the paw paw fruit to the region.

Laidback atmosphere and lifestyle are the hallmarks of life in Aitutaki. Most travelers come from Rarotonga to indulge in day trips. The island also witnesses a large number of extended stays. Visitors can approach the lagoon at their own leisure and pace. Outrigger canoes, which are traditional in nature, are the best bet for touring this region.
