The Bali Hai people of Vanuatu
Vanuatu | Write a review | September 10, 2010When you actually get yourself over here, you might find yourself in a fun filled dilemma. On one hand you are holding a coconut shell that has been handed over to you by one of the locals here.
According to them, when it comes to Kava, you should not do three things, don’t smell it, don’t look at it too much and definitely don’t sip it.
Come to the island of Tanna in Vanuata, which happens to be a scenic archipelago in the southern side of the pacific.
There were some local boys who were sitting in a tree house just nearby which was nicely nestled in an old banyan tree. These have been surrounded by a beautiful encasing of lush green leaves.
While the coconut shell with Kava is still in your hand, you might want to drink it up by now, as the herd of Tanna men and women who are almost completely smeared with war paint, wait in all eagerness for you to drink their drink.
Kava, is essentially a very potent drink from the south pacific region with is made essentially by the roots of a pepper plant. Once you are down a few shells of Kava, you are sure, to be running around bare feet in the jungle most probably in a loin cloth. If you are wild enough then you could also participate in their ceremony and try dancing to their traditional drum beats. Anything more than that, to remember would just be a big bonus!
According to James Michener, in ‘Tales of the South Pacific.’
He writes that, “The way it actually was. The endless ocean. The infinite specks of coral we called islands. Coconut palms nod gracefully toward the ocean. You will find reefs upon which waves break into spray, and inner lagoons, lovely beyond description.”
When you hear something like this you might get an impulsive image of Bora Bora or even Tahiti. This place happens to be one o the many retreats that international movie stars come to.
But the fact remains that Vanuatu is a dreamy and not so very well known destination that lies nicely tucked between Australia and Fiji which has a lot of tradition and is quite cheaper than most other islands in the likes of this one, especially in the French Polynesia region.
The island if filled with lots of palm tress and crisp coral reefs which are amazingly tropical look. And its makes for good eye candy for nature enthusiasts. In fact it would also make a lovely Brochure. This place is quite intriguing as well. The place is warm, the people are hospitable.
According to the New Economics foundation, which is essentially a British think tank, has rated Vanuatu as the happiest place on earth in quality of life index, taking into consideration the well being of the people and of course Environmental issues.
