The many street signs here must indicate that you have reached the brown trout capital of the world. The town officials have even erected a large sculpture of the trout fish I a park which is right in the middle of the main business street of this own and the Mataura River. There is a world famous brown trout stream just a few feet away.
The buildings have many stores of fruits and vegetable stores and there are many stalls and stands as well. There are a lot of tourists who come regularly by bus along with their guides and the local fisherman, just walk the streets in the garb which is meant for fly fishing. This place also happens to be a world famous fly flush destination.
The Mataura River impressively extends for about one hundred and forty miles in trout rich waters. This river also is known for being the sheep and dairy capital of the entire world. There is no real access point for the water as the water just moves around the flock and the herd.
You can rent a small truck so that you could take along you fly rods, reels, waders, boots and drink coolers. There are also fly boxes and vests. You might find the locals just move around here and cause a stir amongst the many cows that moo and grumble their way to the side.
When you actually do get to Mataura, all of it is worth the trouble. There is a wide river that glides quite beautifully and runs along the landscape. You will also see some dry flies which just move around on the surface of the water. You will also find a lot of anglers in the streams.
There flight from the United States is about twenty two hours; however, the whole fishing experience is worth all the flight time.

A lot of tourist are pretty sure that fishing in these waters would get about three pounds of trout on any given day. The local fishermen here catch fish that are about seventeen to nineteen inches long. There are streams here that contain trout that weight on an average bout five to seven pounds.
Earlier, New Zealand used to import trout from Germany, France and England in the early eighteen hundred and sixties. The rainbow trout which was brought in from the Russian Rive which is in California has also thrived here quite well. Although, it is the brown trout that make up most of the trout population on the south island. This region is always been scouted by hiker, mountain climbers, kayak enthusiast and the many photographers. Mount Cook is the highest peak here. It is more than twelve thousand feet. The streams here are as clear as gin. And the streams here cascade all the way down to the river valley. This valley offers you amazing views and there are sunrises in big skies which are like those of the American west. All this burst with color.
