Playing with sharks in Fiji

Fiji | Write a review | September 21, 2010

There is a moment when you see the sheer awe and excitement of being just one arms length from the many hungry sharks. In fact they could even be so close tat you could lock eyes with the, and one of them blitzes by your head.

When you go scuba diving in Fiji, where a group of three hundred islands are strewn across the south pacific region. This poses a kind of recreational place for anyone who has less that one month to spare.  You could get a change to chase manta rays across the astrolabe reef which is just off the Kadavu Island.  It would make the whole thing quite pristine. The remote waters here are from between the big islands.  The soft corals, soft and legendary, carpets the great white wall in the somosomo strait.  The sharks diving site is just off the pacific harbor are all just a couple of drives away from the main airport on Viti Levu.  You might have to dodge your way in if you want to score lots and lots of big fish.

You will see large swarms of giant trevally each bigger than the torso of a fully grown man.  You could also see a grouper that is amazingly larger than anything you have ever seen before. Apart from these you could see, school of red snappers, suckerfish moving slow and stealthily with their large flat heads.  When you have such a large amount of smaller reef she’s that could the deep that are along here , they range above the biggest obstacle which is unobstructed and photographed  to the huge bull sharks that are swimming close by.

There is a trick to lure sharks that is quite simple. The many dive boats around chum up waters with lots of pounds of discarded fish scraps. These draw in a storm of life from many miles around. A lot of people think this is cheating. And a lot of biologists fret over the impact that this could have on the behavior of sharks. Not to mention aquatic life and habitat are quite delicate and these things tend to upset the balance all around the reefs.

If you kneel on the sea floor which is almost one hundred feet below, you could probably count the number of bull sharks that circle directly above your head. The skin is quite taut and it gives into thick layers of muscles. When you actually do go higher up, you may see up two sizes smaller shark move quite fast around the grey reefs and the black and white tips. If you are lucky you might end up with just a swoosh of water on your face from a passing of the tail of the shark.

If you don’t clamp down so hard on the regulators, you would surely have your mouths open in awe.

All this is fun, although, after you get the sharks close to you, handling them is quite important and it is almost like an art. The professional divers would probably flank the entire group. They even have aluminum prods so that if the sharks do get offensive the divers have a sort of defense mechanism.
